Damp, Wet, or Dry: The Rating That Decides Where a Fixture Can Go

We replaced the light over our back steps with something we actually liked — a squat black lantern with a seeded glass shade, marked down at the end of a season. It looked terrific for about fourteen months. Then the glass started collecting a film of condensation on the inside that never dried out, and one November evening the bulb flickered and quit and the socket underneath had gone green and crusty. The fixture wasn't defective. I had just bought a fixture rated for damp locations and hung it somewhere that rain lands, and the small print on the box had told me so before I ever got it home.

Three moisture categories, not two

Most of us sort lights into indoor and outdoor and stop there. The people who test them use three categories, and the middle one is where the mistakes live. UL 1598, the Standard for Safety for Luminaires, defines dry, damp, and wet as distinct moisture-protection types, and every listed fixture is evaluated against one of them. A dry-location fixture is meant for interiors not normally subject to dampness. A damp-location fixture is built for places that are normally or periodically subject to condensation of moisture on or near electrical parts, including partially protected spots. A wet-location fixture is built for somewhere water can drip, splash, or flow directly on it.

Read those definitions next to each other and the gap becomes obvious. Damp is about moisture in the air arriving on the fixture. Wet is about liquid water arriving at the fixture with some force behind it. Those are different physical problems, and a housing designed for the first one is not quietly capable of the second.

How a fixture earns a wet listing

The wet rating isn't a manufacturer's opinion about how sturdy the housing looks. UL 1598 specifies three wet-location tests — rain, sprinkler, and immersion — and a given luminaire is subjected to one or more of them depending on how and where it's meant to be mounted. A wall-mounted exterior lantern gets tested for the water it will actually meet; a recessed downlight destined for a protected ceiling is tested differently than a fixture going into a soffit that catches blowing rain. UL's own description of how it evaluates landscape and outdoor luminaires notes that line-voltage products are assessed for compliance with UL 1598 "including the applicable wet location requirements," and that polymeric enclosures get extra scrutiny for whether they survive ultraviolet exposure and very low temperatures.

That last point deserves a moment. Plastic parts on an outdoor fixture face two things a lab has to check separately from water: years of sunlight, and cold. A gasket that stays flexible at seventy degrees and goes brittle at fifteen has stopped being a gasket in January, which is precisely when you'd rather it worked.

The requirement is a marking, not a vibe

The National Electrical Code handles this in Article 410, which covers luminaires. Under its rules for specific locations, fixtures installed in damp or wet locations have to be installed so that water can't enter or accumulate in wiring compartments, lampholders, or other electrical parts, and a fixture installed in a wet location has to be marked as suitable for wet locations. The word "marked" is the operative part. This is not a judgment call an installer makes by eyeballing the housing — the fixture either carries the marking or it doesn't, and if it doesn't, it doesn't go there.

You'll find the marking on the fixture itself, usually stamped or printed on a label inside the canopy or on the mounting plate, not only on the carton. That matters when you're evaluating something already hanging on your wall, or a fixture that arrived without its box.

Where "partially protected" gets decided

Here's the judgment that actually confronts homeowners: a covered porch. Under a deep porch roof, well back from the edge, with walls on two sides, a damp-rated fixture is generally the intended use case. Under an eave that overhangs eight inches, on a wall that faces the weather, in a place where a squall drives rain sideways for twenty minutes — that's a wet location wearing a disguise. Wind is the variable people forget, because a roof over a light only protects it from water falling straight down, and water rarely obliges.

My back-step lantern was the second case. There was a roof over it in the sense that something existed above it, but the lens took angled rain for a year, and its gaskets were never asked to handle that.

Good to Know A wet-location listing satisfies a damp location, but never the reverse. If you're unsure which category a spot falls into — and covered porches, open garages, and soffits genuinely are ambiguous — buying the wet-rated fixture costs a little more and closes the question permanently.

Indoor spots that count as wet

Some of the wettest locations in a house have a roof over them. Directly above a bathtub or inside a shower enclosure is the clearest example, and the code addresses the zone around tubs and showers specifically, requiring fixtures there to be rated for the moisture they'll actually meet — wet-location marking where the fixture is subject to shower spray. Steam is unforgiving in a way that rain isn't, because it arrives as vapor, gets everywhere a gasket isn't, and condenses on the coolest surface it can find, which is often the inside of a lens. It's a good reminder that the categories describe conditions rather than geography.

What failure actually looks like

Water in the wrong fixture rarely announces itself. What you get first is cosmetic and easy to dismiss: condensation inside the lens that lingers after a rain, a rust bloom weeping from a seam, a white or green crust building on the socket shell. Then the electrical symptoms start — a bulb that fails far too young, a fixture that works intermittently in wet weather and fine when it's dry, a GFCI on that circuit that begins tripping during storms and then stops on its own. That last one is worth taking seriously rather than resetting on autopilot, because a GFCI tripping in the rain is a device doing its job about current going somewhere it shouldn't. Corrosion at a socket also raises resistance right where the connection lives, and resistance at a connection makes heat.

Auditing the ones already up

You can inspect a fair amount from a stepladder without touching wiring, and the power should be off at the switch before you go peering into anything. Look through the lens for standing water or a persistent inside film. Check the underside for a drain path — most wet-rated exterior fixtures are designed so water that gets in can get out, and a fixture holding a shallow puddle is telling you something. Look for the label with the location rating. Note any rust running from a seam or gasket, and any powdery deposit near the socket. If you own the paperwork, the manufacturer's installation instructions state the intended location rating in plain language on the first page.

Buying the right one the first time

When you're shopping, find the location rating before you fall for the finish. It's on the box, in the specification table of any online listing, and in the installation sheet. For anything mounted outdoors, default to wet-rated unless the fixture is genuinely tucked under deep cover — the price difference is small and the decision stops needing to be right. For a bathroom, match the rating to the fixture's distance from the tub or shower rather than to the room as a whole. A fixture that lists no location rating at all is a dry-location product.

Where the line falls for a homeowner

Reading a label, spotting condensation, and noticing rust are things you should absolutely be doing, and choosing correctly at the store prevents nearly all of this. Replacing an exterior fixture is where it stops being simple: outdoor boxes involve weatherproof covers and gaskets that have to be intact and correctly seated to be worth anything, and a fixture that's been wet has usually left corrosion behind in the box that a new lantern won't fix. If the fixture is on a circuit that's been tripping a GFCI, treat that as a fault to be diagnosed rather than a nuisance to be tolerated.

Call a Pro Checking ratings and looking for water intrusion is fine to do yourself with the power off. Have a licensed electrician handle anything past that: an exterior fixture with corrosion inside the box, water in a wall or ceiling box, a fixture over a tub or shower that isn't rated for its location, or an outdoor circuit that trips a GFCI in wet weather. Those involve the wiring and the weatherproofing behind the fixture, not just the fixture — and a corroded box needs to be evaluated and replaced, not covered up with something new.
