Light Bulb Codes Explained: A19, E26, BR30 and Friends

The first time I stood in a hardware store trying to replace a burned-out recessed light, I learned that the light bulb aisle speaks its own language. The box in my hand said BR30, the bulb at home said nothing legible anymore, and the shelf offered me A19s, PAR38s, and something called a G25 — all of them screwing into what looked like the same socket. Changing a bulb is squarely homeowner territory, but buying the right one requires decoding a naming system nobody ever explains. It turns out the system is genuinely simple once someone tells you the rule: every bulb code is answering two separate questions, and each answer is just a letter for a category plus a number for a measurement.

Every bulb code answers two questions

The first question is what shape is the glass? — that's the code printed large on the box, like A19 or BR30. The second question is what base screws into the socket? — that's the code that starts with E on most household bulbs, like E26 or E12. Manufacturers usually print both somewhere on the packaging, and the two are independent: the same A19 shape can come with different bases, and the same E26 base shows up under wildly different shapes. When a replacement bulb disappoints — it fits the socket but pokes out of the fixture, or matches the old shape but won't screw in — it's almost always because only one of the two questions got answered at the store.

Shape codes: a letter for the profile, a number in eighths of an inch

The letter in a shape code names the family of glass profile. "A" is the classic pear-shaped bulb everyone draws when they draw a light bulb — the A stands for "arbitrary," which tells you how long ago this system was invented. "B" and "CA" are the narrow candle shapes in chandeliers, "G" is a globe, "BR" is a bulged reflector, "PAR" is a parabolic aluminized reflector (a directional floodlight, in normal words), "T" is a tube, and "MR" is the small multifaceted reflector common in track lighting. The number after the letter is the bulb's widest diameter, measured in eighths of an inch. So an A19 is an A-shape bulb that's 19 eighths of an inch — 2 3/8 inches — across at its widest point. A BR30 is a bulged reflector 30 eighths, or 3 3/4 inches, across. Once you know the eighths rule, the whole shelf decodes itself.

Base codes: E is for Edison, and the number is millimeters

The base code describes the metal part that makes contact with the socket. On screw-in household bulbs the letter is E, for Edison screw — the threaded design is genuinely his — and the number is the base's diameter in millimeters. Yes, the shape number is imperial eighths and the base number is metric millimeters, in the same code, on the same box. Nobody said the system was elegant, only that it's consistent. E26 is the medium base, the standard household socket that the overwhelming majority of North American lamps and fixtures use. E12 is the little candelabra base found in chandeliers, sconces, and decorative fixtures. E17, the intermediate size, shows up in some ceiling fans and appliance lamps, and E39, the big mogul base, lives in high-output shop and barn fixtures. There are also pin-style bases — GU10 twists into place, GU5.3 pushes straight in — mostly on those small MR16-shaped track and accent bulbs.

Good to Know You'll sometimes see E27 on imported bulbs or lamps — that's the European standard, one millimeter wider than the North American E26. In practice the two usually thread into each other's sockets, but the electrical specs behind them differ, so the safe habit is to buy the base your fixture or lamp actually specifies rather than treating the two as officially interchangeable.

Which fixtures want which bulbs

Most of the time the fixture's design tells you what it was built around. Table and floor lamps, ceiling fixtures, and porch lights overwhelmingly want an A19 on an E26 base — the default bulb of the household. Recessed ceiling cans are shaped to swallow a reflector bulb, usually a BR30 (or the slightly bigger BR40 in larger cans), so the light fills the cone and washes downward instead of glaring sideways. Chandeliers and wall sconces are built around the small E12 base with a candle-shaped B10 or CA10 on top. Bathroom vanity bars look best with G25 globes, which are designed to be seen bare. Outdoor floodlight holders and some track heads want the directional punch of a PAR30 or PAR38, and small track or accent fixtures often take MR16s — that's one place to check the base carefully, because MR16s come in both push-in and twist-in pin styles that are not interchangeable. Ceiling fan light kits are the wildcard: depending on the model they may take E26, E17, or E12, so that's a check-before-you-shop fixture.

What to bring to the store

The most reliable move is the least glamorous one: with the switch off and the bulb cool, take the old bulb out and bring it with you, since matching glass-to-glass and base-to-base in your hand beats every mental note. If the old bulb's printing has burned away — common on bulbs that lived a long life — the fixture itself often helps: recessed cans typically have their trim size printed inside the ring, and lamp sockets are almost certainly E26 if a standard bulb has ever lived there. Beyond shape and base, the box will also list lumens, color temperature, and whether the bulb is dimmable; those choices are covered in their own articles here, but they ride on top of getting the shape and base right first. None of this involves anything beyond a bulb-level swap, which is exactly where a homeowner's job description begins and ends.

When the new bulb doesn't fit or sit right

A few predictable failure modes account for nearly every disappointing trip back to the store. If the bulb screws in fine but sticks out of the recessed can or presses against a glass shade, the shape number was too big — an A21 or BR40 where an A19 or BR30 belonged. If it sits too deep in the can and lights the ceiling instead of the room, the shape ran small. If the base is visibly close but won't thread, you've likely met the E12-versus-E17 problem, or an E26 bulb meeting an E27 lamp holder that isn't cooperating. And if a bulb rattles or flickers after a swap, back the switch off and reseat it snugly before suspecting anything more dramatic. Socket adapters that convert one base size to another do exist, but they change how the bulb sits, can defeat the fixture's shade or trim, and add a joint where heat concentrates — matching the correct base is always the better answer than stacking adapters.

Stop and Call a Pro If the socket itself is the problem — the bulb is right but the socket is loose in the fixture, cracked, wobbly, or shows any scorching or discoloration — that's no longer a bulb question. A damaged socket means the fixture needs repair or replacement, which is wiring work. Leave the bulb out, leave the switch off, and have a licensed electrician look at it.

The codes feel like jargon until the day they save you a third trip to the store. Two letters-and-numbers — one for the glass, one for the base — describe every bulb in the aisle, and both are printed on the box of whatever you're replacing it with. Read them once at home, and the wall of bulbs stops being a wall.
