A portable generator is one of those purchases that sits quietly in the garage for years and then, during the one storm that knocks out the power, becomes the most important machine in the house. Carbon monoxide: the risk that kills the most people
A gasoline engine produces carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell, and a portable generator produces it in enormous quantity — far more than a car idling. Beyond the two big traps, a handful of ordinary habits keep a generator safe over an outage. Refuel it with the engine off and cooled down — gasoline spilled on a hot engine can ignite — and store fuel in approved containers away from the house and any living space. Use only outdoor-rated extension cords heavy enough for the load, with all three prongs intact, and inspect them for cracks or fraying before you rely on them.
